Challenging the concert formatĪriyakkudi Ramanuja Iyengar is considered to be the doyen who created the existing concert format rendered in sabhas today. This has helped gather large crowds to concerts both by piquing individual interest and a being good marketing strategy to television channels. It could be presenting a particular group of compositions like Nandanar Charithram and Utsava Sampradaya or packaging a concert using a an abstract theme like Sarvam Krishna Mayam, Krishna Gaanam– which presents compositions on Krishna by various composers, and Tamizhukku Amudhendru Per, Tamizhum Naanum – delving into Tamizh compositions. Thematic presentations is on the rise in the past few years. Today, this phenomenon has become widespread as many more musicians take up detailed singing of such compositions. There is a general stigma attached to the singing of vivadhi ragas, which was why only few yesteryear musicians like Thanjavur Kalyanaranam or S Rajam explored vivadhi raga compositions in their concerts.
